Diploma supplements and the new “Professional Bachelor” and “Professional Master” title supplements
Showcase your higher vocational education qualification
Swiss higher vocational education benefits from stronger recognition through new measures adopted by the Federal Council. From 1 October 2026 holders of higher vocational qualifications may use the new international title supplements Professional Bachelor or Professional Master depending on their qualification, to improve understanding and recognition in Switzerland and internationally.
Which qualifications are covered?
The title supplements apply to:
- Federal Diploma of Higher Education → Professional Bachelor
- Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education from a professional education institution → Professional Bachelor
- Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education awarded after a higher professional examination → Professional Master
These supplements are added to the protected official title and do not replace it.
Examples
- Qualified social educator from a professional education institution, Professional Bachelor
- HR specialist with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, Professional Bachelor
- Qualified accountant, Professional Master
Existing qualification holders are also covered
People who obtained their federal professional qualification, advanced federal diploma or professional education institution diploma before 1 October 2026 may also use the corresponding title supplement.
The authorities will not automatically issue a new diploma. Graduates may nevertheless request a new diploma supplement mentioning the title supplement.
What is a diploma supplement?
It is an official document accompanying a professional qualification or diploma. It describes:
- the qualification level achieved;
- the skills acquired;
- the educational context;
- the diploma’s place in the Swiss vocational education system.
It helps employers, educational institutions and international organisations understand the qualification.
How can you obtain a diploma supplement?
New graduates receive it with their diploma when available in the National Qualifications Framework NQF.
Earlier graduates can apply to SERI for an updated supplement. A fee applies and conditions must be met, notably that the qualification is classified in the NQF for vocational and professional qualifications.
Better international recognition
The introduction of Professional Bachelor and Professional Master is an important step in raising the profile of Swiss higher vocational education.
These designations help employers, international partners and educational institutions understand the level of Swiss qualifications while preserving official titles protected by Swiss law.

In memory of Dr Matthias Rath, who died on 17 January 2026 aged 71: cellular medicine loses one of its boldest pioneers.
The German doctor, born in 1955, influenced understanding of cardiovascular disease. His work argued that atherosclerosis was more than a cholesterol issue: an early form of scurvy linked to chronic vitamin C deficiency. Rath explained that humans, unlike many animals, had lost the ability to synthesise vitamin C. He proposed that the body compensates by producing lipoprotein(a), a sticky molecule deposited on arterial walls to repair microlesions. It resembles LDL but has an adhesive Apo(a) chain. He linked this to higher heart attack risk than in cats or dogs, which produce their own vitamin C. He also studied homocysteine, toxic when it accumulates and worsened by B6, B12 or folate deficiencies. With Linus Pauling he developed “cellular medicine”: providing optimal nutrients, including high-dose vitamin C, lysine and proline, to stop or reverse plaque formation. His controversial ideas inspired thousands of patients. In Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks, But People Do, he wrote: “The human heart pays the price of our evolution.” As research continues to explore these links, this tribute remembers a visionary who placed health in every cell. May his bold, humane legacy continue to inspire.
